Auditors urge better bookkeeping in Swain courts

Raleigh – A state audit of the Swain County Clerk of Superior Court's office found the office's bookkeeping isn't always keeping up with its financial transactions.

Clerk Helen Styles's office is subject to regular checks by the office of state auditor Les Merritt.

In a report released this week, auditors said office records didn't show a recent investment of money held in trust by the office.

Such money is often held for children or incapacitated adults.

In a written response, Styles said her office properly handled the investment but didn't record it promptly. The staff is considering how to "cope with the ever-increasing duties of the bookkeeping department," she wrote.

The audit also found people in the office are improperly sharing passwords with one another, a typical complaint about small clerks' offices. Styles said she gave notice to stop such sharing.
