Dart -- To Democratic gubernatorial candidates, for using government resources and employees to campaign. A review by State Auditor Les Merritt of practices in the offices of State Treasurer Richard Moore and Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue found both had allowed inappropriate political activity. Merritt's review found 53 documents and 60 e-mails on state computers in Moore's office. He reported that Perdue installed and paid for Internet service for employees' personal use, a link that encouraged employees to do campaign work. Both Moore and Perdue said they are correcting the errors. They should have made sure they never happened in the first place. Thank goodness for the Republican Merritt, who has shown a willingness to nail Democratic leaders on misconduct that always before drew only a wink and a shrug.
