Auditor Merritt Takes Action to Improve Health Insurance for Children

A report by Auditor Merritt revealed that the state could save nearly $16 million and use the money to provide about 10,000 more children with health insurance by switching responsibility for handling medical bills from one state office to another.  more...

 

Auditor Merritt Takes Action to Reform the State Mental Health System

Auditor Merritt has exposed fraud, waste and abuse in our state's mental health system -- an area in which such abuses impact some of our state's most vulnerable citizens.  At the Albemarle Mental Health Center, the director was paid more than twice the standard salary.  At that same center, an administrative assistant was paid a higher salary than Governor Mike Easley.  Auditor Merritt called for a statewide system of fiscal management for all of the state's 25 mental health agencies and called on the state Department of Health and Human Services to require more detailed accountability from the agencies.
